What’s it like to be part of the show?
Some cast members share their experiences:
"I am a social justice worker/psychologist that has spent my career helping marginalized/oppressed groups to navigate systems not made for them and to address their mental health. This work has allowed me to help others to find liberation in their lives; to no longer feel powerless--- but to feel "empowered". Participating in the Menopause Monologues is the first time that the same gift of liberation and empowerment was given to me. I found a sisterhood with women that allowed me to be unapologetically myself (vulnerable, sometimes a mess; but always brilliant and free).I am so thankful for this sisterhood that has normalized all the symptoms of menopause (that I did not previously know to be normal), I am forever changed."-Dr. Lynna McPhatter-Harris (she/her)
“Being part of The Menopause Monologues was, hands down, one of the most inspiring experiences I've ever had—and yes, I feel an enormous amount of pride about it! While many women on stage shared their own stories, I had the honor of bringing another woman’s story to life. There’s something magical (and just a little nerve-wracking) about feeling the power and responsibility of sharing someone else’s truth. This was my first time solo on stage- it was equal parts terrifying and exhilarating, but the love and connection from the audience? Absolutely electrifying! After the show, someone even asked me if I was a professional comedian—I had to laugh and tell them, “Nope, just a middle-aged estate attorney in perimenopause!” Walking off that stage, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for my local community!” - Heather (she/her)
“I LOVE being a part of The Menopause Monologues! The beauty of this collaboration is finding such a wonderful group of smart, talented, caring women who all share the passion of communicating to others, in order to educate and empower them to help themselves.” - Kathleen (she/her)
“If someone were to ask me what is the thing that scares me the most I would have said performing on stage …(with being buried alive as a close second).
So my first reaction to performing my submission was Hell, NO and then run and cower somewhere. But that feeling was actually the catalyst for me ending up saying yes…although hesitantly. Do what scares you the most…do the hard things…shake things up…
Well, I did, and it was a truly profound experience. Still terrifying, but SO immensely rewarding.
The show was this past weekend in California with three sold out performances and a resounding positive response from all!” -Julie (she/her)
When I turned 50, I felt a shift. It wasn't just the hormones, but something that said, "you're free to do things that scare you and you can be better for it". Growing up as a child of immigrants, most people have a lack of permission to just try something for the sake of trying and the idea of making mistakes runs the risk of working against the sacrifices our parents make. This show was a practice of liberating myself to be immersed in art and to be comfortable trying something I've never done before (stage performance and reading my writing out loud). The collaboration with these talented women was life changing and I'll be forever grateful and honored to be included in this powerful show. In a time of great chaos, violence, and division, it was healing to be rooted in the practice of making art and being in connection with others.” - Jen (she/her)
